Bridgestone Potenza RE97AS Tire Review & Rating

Built as a performance all-season model, the Bridgestone Potenza RE97 AS is ideally suited for all types of passenger coupes, sedans and crossovers. It balances a blend of all-weather traction and increased handling to go with a quiet and comfortable ride quality.

A high silica tread compound features the latest in tread polymers for added grip on both wet or dry road surfaces alike. Steering response time and braking are further enhanced thanks to the tire’s symmetric tread design and optimized footprint. Bridgestone has stiffened the shoulder tread blocks to give this tire a bit more cornering performance, and we feel it does a good job over many similar tires in this class.

Four circumferential grooves allow for water to be expelled from the tread area and reduce the chances of hydroplaning, which is another strong point on this tire. It handles very well in wet weather and the stiffened shoulder blocks help improve cornering and response times when road surfaces are slick and provide less traction.

The Potenza RE97 AS allows for reduced noise credited to the variable pitch sequence of the tire. Whether driving at high speeds or just around the city, Bridgestone has tried to keep noise to a minimum, although this is more of an issue as the tire wears.

With two inner steel belts and spirally wrapped nylon, the RE97AS is built to be more durable and stable throughout the speed range. Bridgestone provides sizes ranging from 16-20 inches, and a speed rating of V or W depending on size. You’ll also find up to a 55,000 mile tread warranty on the tire as well.

Pros

  • Handling and braking performance
  • Excellent dry traction and cornering
  • Comfort and stability

Cons

  • Poor in winter conditions
  • Noise

Overall Thoughts

In many ways really like what Bridgestone has done with RE97 AS. It delivers solid dry and wet handling for the most part, and provides excellent overall stability.

That said, there are a couple of areas where this model does not meet expectations. The biggest would be traction on snow and ice. It’s nearly non-existent, and this is also an area that has been pointed out in numerous driver reviews as well. In addition, road noise is an issue as the tire wears down.

We have been pleasantly surprised with how well the tread life is on this tire. It carries a 480-A-A rating and with its optimized footprint that keeps tread heat to a minimum, it holds up well. Overall, the RE97 AS is a middle of the pack model that is not a bad choice if winter performance is not needed.
