Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS Pole Position Tire Review & Rating

As a direct replacement to the RE960 AS, the all-new Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS Pole Position is designed to take high-performance all-season driving to the next level. Developed for drivers of higher end sport coupes and sedans, this newest model utilizes Bridgestone’s latest tire technology in the tread design.

A directional tread pattern and silica enhanced tread compound improves steering response and provide better overall traction on wet, dry or snow covered roads.

Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS Pole Position Tire Review

Dry surface grip and cornering abilities, as well as braking performance, are increased due to a continuous center rib, notched shoulders and a stiffer sidewall filler that resists tire distortion at higher cornering speeds.

Wet and snow surface handling and traction benefit from four circumferential grooves and added lateral grooves that combine to channel more water and slush from under the tire. It also greatly improves hydroplane resistance.

L.L. Carbon improves tread wear and prevents premature damage from cracking or chipping.

Inside the tread you will find two steel belts that are spirally wrapped with nylon and set between polyester cord plies to give the tire added strength, performance and durability at higher speeds. The unique O-Bead enhances ride comfort and overall tire uniformity.

Cons

  • Winter traction

Overall Thoughts

The Bridgestone Potenza RE970 AS has quite a number of good things going for it. The grip and handling on both dry and wet road surfaces is outstanding. They hold the corners well, even at higher speeds. Steering response and stability rate very high as well, with many drivers saying the same thing in reviews on this tire.

Tread wear is longer lasting than many tires in this class. The one area that sticks out as a negative would be winter handling, especially on deep snow and ice, but this is nothing uncommon for a UHP all-season tire.

Overall, this Bridgestone tire is a good value in a high performance tire. We rank it in the upper half of this category. While quite good, in our opinion it ranks just under models like the BFGoodrich Comp-2 A/S, Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus, Continental DWS06 and a few others.
