BFGoodrich Mud Terrain TA KM2 vs. Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac

As two of the longer running off-road tires on the market, both the BFGoodrich Mud Terrain TA KM2 and Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac are among the top name brand tires in this class. They provide truck and SUV owners rugged off-road performance, while delivering better than expected drivability on the street. The question becomes… which tire is superior?

Dry Traction

For a mud tire, the BFG KM2 offers excellent traction on dry pavement. Its symmetric tread pattern gives it inspiring confidence around town or on the highway. The DuraTrac is also impressive on dry pavement, but we believe performance in this area is just under that of the BFG tire. Both tires feature responsive steering and better than expected cornering stability.

Off-Road Traction

Off-road is obviously where these two tires shine. That being the case, they certainly do not disappoint. The DuraTrac is sure-footed on any type of terrain, especially in dirt and mud. However, the KM2 is a step ahead in our opinion when it comes to driving in deeper mud and sand. The tread design and ability to self-clean is outstanding. Unless you’re attempting to navigate through the deepest stickiest muck imaginable, the KM2 is going to get you through it.

Aired down, both of these tires handle rocks very well. The KM2 also has a tougher sidewall construction that resists tearing. We give the nod to BFG in this area.

Wet Traction

Driving on wet pavement can be a major issue for many off-road tires. The bigger lugs and smooth tread surface contribute to the lack of wet grip in many cases. However, this is less of an issue with either one of these tires. Both do a good job in the area of hydroplane resistance. Although just about even, we give a slight edge to the DuraTrac.

Winter Traction

Driving in winter road conditions is an area where you’ll find a good deal of separation between these two tires. While the BFG KM2 delivers good performance in light to deep snow, it’s on ice where this tire struggles. The lack of sipes makes it more difficult to navigate icy roads or hard-packed snow.

For the DuraTrac it’s a much different story. Traction on both snow and ice is outstanding for this type of tire. This can be attributed in large part to being branded with the mountain/snowflake emblem, meaning it meets severe snow service standards. It’s also pinned for adding studs. If you drive in a good deal of snow and ice over the course of the year, the Goodyear DuraTrac is one of the leading tires here.

Handling/Cornering

This is another area where the edge goes to the KM2, although not by much. The larger, and stiffer, shoulder blocks increase cornering stability both on the highway and around town. This is even more evident when pulling trailers or other heavier loads. The DuraTrac does a very good job as well, but we feel the KM2 holds a slight edge in this department.

Ride/Noise Comfort

You can flip a coin in this department. Despite the fact that we’re dealing with MT tires, both of these models offer a very civilized ride comfort. Sure, you’ll find a little hum on the highway, but nothing that will have you pulling your hair out over.

Treadlife

Once again, this is an area where both models perform almost equal. They wear extremely well for the most part, especially on the road. Their sidewalls are strong and very durable, offering excellent puncture, cut and chip resistance on rugged terrain.

Warranty

There is no mileage warranty for the KM2, which is what you find on most all MT tires. Materials and workmanship however are backed for 6 years. Goodyear does provide a 50K mile warranty, but it is only on non-LT or flotation sizes. So it’s basically not much different from BFG’s tire warranty. Goodyear also provides a 6-year materials and workmanship guarantee as well.

Winner

It’s not easy deciding between these two tires. They both are built to tackle tough conditions and terrain, while their aggressive designs up the looks of any rig. That said, we feel that if you drive in quite a bit of snow and ice, or other rough winter weather conditions, the DuraTrac would be our recommendation. But if winter weather is not a big factor in your decision, then either tire will make a great choice.
