Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx Tire Review & Rating

The Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx is engineered to be a tough off-road commercial grade traction tire that is also designed to provide exceptional on-road handling and enhanced ride comfort. Developed for drivers of trucks, large vans and SUV’s, the ST Maxx uses a 3-ply Armor Tek-3 construction for added strength and durability.

A tough new silica and natural rubber cut and chip resistant tread compound combined with the Armor Tek-3 construction creates a tire that better withstands the punishing impact of rocks and other materials against the sidewall and tread area. Cooper has added an angled ply construction to disperse the forces of impact that can severely damage any tire. The result is a tire that can take a beating and just keep on going, which numerous reviews from other drivers have confirmed as well.

The hybrid 4-5 rib tread design and other tread features give the ST Maxx more than capable on-road performance as well. The tread block pattern creates increased water evacuation from under the tread and better wet surface driving. This is another strength for this tire compared to the competition in this class.

Another point that we need to mention is how much more quiet this tire is compared to other similar tires. It will surprise when you first drive it at highway speeds and wonder why you aren’t hearing a lot of excess noise.

Cooper has also included the little extras that you would expect on an AT tire, like stone ejector ribs around the tread. Built into the lateral grooves, these ejector ribs quickly rid the tire of mud buildup, rocks, stones, and other debris. The ST Maxx carries an E load rating for those who use their trucks for heavy-duty load carrying.

Cooper has built this model with studdable lugs for those who live in an area where increased snow performance is a must. The ST Maxx is available in a range of 15-20 inch sizes and comes with a limited tread warranty.

Overall Thoughts

Cooper has come up with a pretty good combination between an off-road tire that aggressively goes through all types of terrain, while also having the street manners to be driven on a regular basis. You would think the tread design and style of this tire would make it unacceptable for street or highway driving, but that’s not the case. This model is also surprisingly quiet for a tire in this class. Whether around town or on the highway, there is not a lot of excessive tire noise.

Treadlife is exceptional, and the Armor-Tek3 provides excellent rock puncture resistance when the tires are aired down. Our only wish is that Cooper would add more sizes to the lineup. Overall, if you are wanting a tire for rugged to severe off-road use, yet also need it to be driven on the street, the Discoverer ST Maxx is one of the best.

Warranty

Cooper provides a limited tread warranty on the ST Maxx. Tire uniformity is guaranteed for the first 2/32 inch of wear. Materials and workmanship are warranted for life and include free replacement during the first 25% of wear. Cooper follows that up with a prorated amount down to the last 2/32 inch of useable tread left on the tire.
