Michelin Pilot Super Sport Tire Review & Rating

When you have a tire that is original equipment on some of the highest performing sports cars manufactured in the world today, then you know it has to be well made and deliver top performance. That’s exactly what you get with the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tire. 

Dry or wet surface performance is awe inspiring behind the wheel. The Le Mans inspired tread compound on the outer shoulder sports track-type performance that holds up to the added stresses of high speed cornering.

Michelin’s latest generation wet oriented elastomers combine with notched center ribs and an inboard shoulder to give this tire incredible wet surface performance at higher speeds.

The one thing about most maximum performance summer tires is that are all about speed and handling, at the sacrifice of tread life. Most tend to wear out after 15,000-20,000 miles. That is not the case with this Pilot Super Sport. Michelin has designed the tread compound to last up to twice as long as other competitor tires through the use of Variable Contact Patch 2.0 technology and a unique Twaron (more on that below) belt for longer wear.

Inside the tread you will find dual steel belts that are spirally wound with Twaron cord. Why does this matter? Twaron is a polyamide cord that is not only super-strong to withstand the forces of high speed driving, but it is also much lighter weight and longer wearing. The result is better performance and added long-term durability. Michelin claims up to a 12% gain in handling over other competitors with this new technology, and it shows.

Michelin offers sizes ranging from 17-22 inches, and all sizes sport a Y-speed rating. An unheard of 30K mile tread warranty is also part of the package.

Overall Thoughts

If an ultra-high performance tire is what you are seeking for your sports car or sedan, the Michelin Pilot Super Sport is what you are looking for. The grip and handling in the corners is amazing, whether on the road or track. What may be even more surprising is the quiet and comfortable ride this tire offers as well. Michelin has even added a 30K mile warranty, which is unreal for tires in this category.

Overall, there’s not much more we can add here. If you’re reading this, then you likely already know what a quality performance tire the Super Sport is. Yes, we like other models like the Continental DW and Pirelli P Zero among several others. Of course, you can argue and make cases for all of them. But when it comes down to putting the best of the best on your high-performance vehicle, there’s no other tire better than this one. Warranty

Michelin warrants the treadlife of the Pilot Super Sport for 6-years or 30,000 miles. (They cut that in half if you use different sizes in rear than in front) Tire uniformity is guaranteed for one-year or the first 2/32 inch of wear.

Materials and workmanship are covered for 6-years and include free tire replacement during the first year or first 25% of wear. Michelin prorates out the amount for the remaining time period down to the final 2/32 inch of tread depth.

You will also find a 30-day satisfaction guarantee and a 3-year flat tire changing service with this model.
