Yokohama AVID Touring-S Tire Review & Rating

Engineered to deliver all-weather handling and enhanced ride comfort, the Avid Touring-S from Yokohama offers drivers a low cost option in standard all-season tires. It’s designed for drivers of all types of coupes, sedans, minivans and smaller SUV’s.

The Touring S sports an symmetrical tread pattern to go with a tri-plex tread compound that is made to increase tread life and provide added traction. Yokohama has added extra siping to the tread and variable tread blocks to increase both dry and wet traction, as well as provide better ride comfort.

A Twin Rail Stability Rib around the center of the tread adds more stability and enhances steering response. It also improves noise reduction.

Tapered Rain Channels, cross traction sipes and circumferential grooves around the tire increase grip on wet, slush or snow covered road surfaces and evacuate more water from under the tire, reducing the risk of hydroplaning.

Inside the tire you’ll find two steel belts, polyester plies and nylon belt edge strips, which combine to provide added strength and durability at higher speeds, while also giving the tire more even tread wear. The Touring-S also has taller hard rubber sidewall inserts that create better absorption of bumps and vibrations, resulting in better ride quality. Yokohama also includes a 65,000 mile tread warranty on this tire.

Pros

  • Tire provides very good traction on dry road surfaces
  • Ride is smooth and comfortable and steering response is impressive
  • Long lasting treadlife
  • Low cost

Cons

  • Tires may get more noisy as they wear down
  • Wet traction needs improving

Overall Thoughts

The Touring S has been around for several years now and is definitely starting to show its age. With today’s newer technology, it’s beginning to pass this model on by to some degree. That said, the Touring-S does perform very well in several key areas. You’ll find this tire delivers good dry traction and handling. The steering is responsive and provides a solid feel for the road. Beyond that, the ride is fairly smooth and comfortable as well.

On the other side of the equation, wet traction is average to poor at best, even when new. As the tire ages, traction deteriorates along with it. We’ve heard this from many different drivers as well. In addition, winter traction, braking and acceleration lag behind other top tires in this class. Finally, road noise increases as the tire begins wearing down.

Overall, this is an average to below average performing tire. For better performance in year-round conditions we would recommend going with tires such as the Continental TrueContact, General Altimax RT43 or Goodyear Assurance Touring among others over this model for basic all-season driving.
