Yokohama Geolandar G055 Tire Review & Rating

Designed specifically for SUV/crossover vehicles, the Yokohama Geolandar G055 is built to satisfy the needs of drivers looking for a quality all-season tire that delivers dependable traction and longer treadwear.

Yokohama uses a premium all-season tread compound in the G055 that contains their unique Orange Oil technology, higher amounts of silica and high tech polymers that are eco-friendly and combine to increase dry and wet traction, as well as grip on snow and ice. A continuous center rib enhances steering response, while the symmetric tread pattern and Yokhama’s Transition Grooves strengthen the tread blocks for increased cornering grip and stability.

Four wide circumferential grooves and zigzag tread grooves add to the tire’s wet traction capabilities, which is about average for tires in this class. The added grooves help evacuate more water from the tread and reduce the risk of hydroplaning. This further assists with braking/acceleration on wet pavement. The added silica and notched sipes are designed to provide extra biting edges that help in getting through light to moderate amounts of snow, which is not a major strength for this tire.

Road noise is another area that Yokohama addressed through their integrated shoulder design. It effectively reduces unwanted outside road noise and provides an added benefit of giving the tire more even treadwear.

Inside the tire you’ll find two steel belts that are spirally wrapped with nylon for added strength and durability at higher speeds. The polyester plies further add to ride comfort. The Yokohama G055 is available in 19 sizes ranging from 16-20 inches and carries an H or V-speed rating. The tires are backed by a 65K mile tread warranty.

Pros

  • Dry traction
  • Ride comfort
  • Treadlife

Cons

  • Harder cornering
  • Winter performance

Overall Thoughts

The crossover tire market has exploded in recent years and Yokohama has tried to address this competitive category with their new G055 model. They have managed to incorporate their latest tire technology into a tire that does a lot of things right. Traction/braking/acceleration on dry pavement is up there with the best tires from Michelin, Continental and others.

Wet and winter traction on snow and ice is about average to below average for an all-season tire. The added sipes and grooves on this tire have helped with grip and other drivers have mentioned this in reviews on the tire. However, we’ve also heard others talk about having difficulty with traction as well. Treadlife appears to be good, and Yokohama backs it for 65,000 miles.

Our only other minor issue is with harder cornering for those who enjoy more spirited driving. It’s not on par with what you’ll find on other top tires like the Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season Plus or Continental LX20. That said, for the vast majority of drivers it will not be a concern at all.

Overall despite the average wet and snow performance, the Yokohama G055 makes for a solid performing highway touring tire. It’s a nice entry into this class and ranks in the mid to upper half of this category.

  1. My 2017 CX-5 came with Yokohamas from dealership (brand new, purchased in 1/2018). I purchased Blizzaks this past fall due to the All Seasons already slipping, etc. So…the last 6 months have been run on the winters. Was just informed this week that this is last season for these Yokos. My car has 18,860 miles on it. Pretty BAD if you ask me.

    1. Something wrong with your vehicle or service center. Used 2016 Murano Platinum awd, Came with new G055. 40K since purchased, also run Blizzak dmv’2s on 18″ rims. Plenty of life left on both.
