Yokohama S. Drive Tire Review & Rating

Yokohama’s ultra-high performance summer driving tire, the S. Drive, (S. Drive stands for Sport Drive) is designed for all types of sports cars, coupes and sedans for drivers who want the latest in tire technology and performance.

The tire sports a directional tread pattern that features a unique micro-flexible silica tread compound and solid center rib. It helps the tire maximize contact with the road, which increases cornering grip on both dry or wet surfaces.

Wet pavement traction is enhanced by wider circumferential grooves and variable angled grooves. They combine to reduce the risk of hydroplaning and give you more added driving confidence when the weather turns to rain.

Yokohama has also added a “Groove-in-Groove” design that provides additional cornering grip and more even tread wear.

Inside the tread you will find two steel belts and jointless nylon cap plies to go along with belt edge strips. They work together to give the tire better durability at higher speeds, as well as a more comfortable ride on the highway.

Something else we found interesting was the fact that the Yokohama S.Drive is lighter in weight than most other tires in its class. In some case it is over 3 pounds lighter per tire, which may seem insignificant but it does make a difference.

Yokohama offers the S.Drive in a wide range of sizes. Currently, there are over 70 different tire sizes available, and they come in V, W and Y speed ratings.

Pros

  • Above average cornering capabilities on dry surfaces
  • Wet road traction is solid
  • Tread life is good
  • Tires ride comfortably

Cons

  • Tires can become a bit noisy later in their tread life

Overall Thoughts

We like the Yokohama S Drive’s aggressive and unique tread design. It’s both attractive and functional at the same time. Expect to find confident handling and precise steering response on this tire. In addition, cornering grip doesn’t leave you disappointed. Traction on wet roads is equally impressive, and tread life for this tire is better than you might expect.

The biggest need for improvement in our opinion would be reducing the road noise at higher speeds. We’ve heard this come from several drivers in reviews of this model. Sure you can turn up the radio, but it would be nice if there was just a little less noise, especially as this tire begins wearing down.

Overall, despite the added noise, this is a solid performing summer tire that doesn’t really disappoint. We rank it in the upper half of the summer high-performance class.

Materials and workmanship are warranted for 5-years and include free tire replacement during the first year or first 2/32 inch of wear. A prorated amount is given for the remaining time period or until the last 2/32 inch of tread depth.

There is also a 30-day test drive with this model that allows you to exchange or refund the tires within 30 days if you are not satisfied.

  1. I put two Sentury UHP on my ’97 Passat with two Yokohama S.Drives. The S.Drives have about 2/3 the treadwear rating of the UHPs but I was getting 20k from the S.Drives where the UHPs were gone in 15K. That was treadwear not damage. In my case thats 0.46 cents per mile for the S.Drives & 0.39 cents for the UHP.
    Traction is a little better with the UHP. The S.Drive starts squealing in to corner just before the UHPs would.
    Road noise was not an issue.
    I did not notice any difference in wet traction between the two but really didnt pay much attention.
    Both are good tires. I would recommend either but lean more toward the UHP.
