Hankook DynaPro HP2 RA33 Tire Review & Rating

Built to improve on the original DynaPro HP, the new Hankook DynaPro HP2 RA33 is designed with added performance in areas of traction, handling, comfort and treadlife. Created for drivers of SUV’s, crossovers and sporty pickups, the Hankook HP2 features year-round drivability around town or out on the highway regardless of weather conditions.

Hankook uses a full silica tread compound on the HP2 along with a symmetric tread pattern that enhances both dry and wet traction. Unique 3D shoulder block technology and a stiff continuous center rib combine to deliver quicker steering response and increased cornering stability, something this tire does well on the highway, especially over the previous version of this model.

Hankook DynaPro HP2 RA33 Tire Review

The tire’s silica compound, four circumferential grooves and added aqua slant sipes and grooves are built to provide better wet grip and reduce the risk of hydroplaning. Unfortunately, this is an area that the HP2 falls short.

Engineered siping in each tread block is designed to significantly improve the number of biting edges for better snow traction. An added benefit to this technology is in reduced braking distances and a lower rolling resistance for a little extra fuel efficiency.

Ride comfort and lower road noise is accomplished through Hankook’s unique Silencer Sipes on the outer shoulders of the tread that reduce the harmonic noise from uneven or grooved pavement, which is a strength here.

Inside the tire are dual steel belts that are spirally wrapped with nylon for strength and durability, as well as more even treadwear. Hankook offers a wide range of 16-20 inch sizes, with H and V-speed ratings. A 65K mile tread warranty is also included on the tire.

Pros

  • Dry traction/handling/braking
  • Above average winter performance
  • Delivers good comfort
  • Treadlife

Cons

  • Improve wet traction

Overall Thoughts

The Hankook HP2 is a solid choice in touring all-season tires for drivers who are looking for excellent dry traction and handling, as well as a good treadlife. We like the overall ride comfort, although the ride is a bit stiffer on very rough road surfaces than models like the Michelin Latitude Tour, Pirelli Scorpion Verde AS Plus or Continental LX20 among a few others.

Another area where you’ll find this tire excels among others in this category is snow and ice traction/braking performance. It does a nice job in all types of winter weather conditions. Road noise is not an issue for this model, and pretty much in line with other top tires in this class.

The one glaring weakness with this tire seems to be with wet grip. It falls short of many other premium tires in this area. Harder cornering is another area that may disappoint more spirited drivers, but this is also not a high performance model designed with more cornering power in mind.

Overall, Hankook has developed a formidable truck/SUV touring all-season tire with the HP2. While arguably not up to the performance levels of models such as the Cooper SRX, Continental LX20 or Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season Plus, this is a tire that will make the majority of drivers happy. The lower price on this tire will only further enhance that feeling.
