Can I Buy Only One Tire If I Need To

Buying New TiresHave you ever found yourself sitting on the side of the road with a damaged tire and needing to replace it with a new one? The question then becomes, can you replace just that one tire or do you have to replace two of them on the same axle, or even all four? It is a question we get all of the time.

The quick and short answer is both yes and no. I know, that’s not exactly what you were wanting to hear. So let me briefly explain and hopefully it will make more sense.

Replace A Single Tire

You can surely replace the one damaged tire on your vehicle with the exact same tire or even another comparable brand tire without any issue. That makes good sense if your tires only have alimited number of miles on them. There is no need to spend big money when you do not need to. The important thing to keep in mind is to make sure you are buying a tire that is the same speed rating and load capacity as the one you are replacing.

Replace Two Tires

If your tires are somewhat aged, you may want to go ahead and replace both the damaged tire and the one beside it. Replacing tires in pairs is quite common, especially when the other two tires are still in pretty good shape. One tip here is to put the new tires on the drive axle, whether in back for rear wheel drive or in front for front wheel drive. That will provide you with better safety in wet road conditions.

Replace All Four Tires

Finally, the last option is to replace all four tires on your car or truck. This would be your best choice if they are already worn down to within 2-4/32 of an inch. 2/32 of inch is considered completely worn out and in need of immediate replacement. States also have laws against driving on bald tires as well. If this is the case in your situation then buying four tires is the wise decision.
