Yokohama Ice Guard IG51V Tire Review & Rating

The Ice Guard IG51V is Yokohama’s newest winter tire that was recently added to their lineup. Developed for drivers of light trucks, crossovers and SUV’s, the IG51V is engineered to provide excellent traction and grip in even the worst of winter weather conditions.

A high density winter tread compound is designed to optimize contact with the road by stabilizing the tread blocks, which increases traction in all types of harsh road conditions. The tire’s dual-action shoulder grooves are built with a zig-zag shape that plows through slush and pushes through deep snow, while also aiding in expelling water away from the tire on wet road surfaces.

Grip on ice is another area that the Ice Guard IG51V excels in. Interlocking 3-Dsipes and Adaptive 3-D sipes combine to create biting edges that grip the ice and maintain stability with the pavement. Circumferential grooves around the tire further increase water evacuation from under the tread and reduce the risk of hydroplaning as well.

Dry surface traction and steering response is enhanced through the angled center rib. Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that are reinforced with nylon for added strength and durability. Yokohama has sizes available from 16-18 inches on this model.

Pros

  • Excellent snow, slush, rain and ice performance
  • Dry traction is very good
  • Steering is crisp for a winter tire
  • Overall tire stability is among best in class
  • Comfortable ride

Cons

  • None at the moment, but this tire is still too new to the market. We will update in the future

Overall Thoughts

Yokohama has developed a winter tire that performs with the likes of Bridgestone Blizzaks and Michelin X-Ice’s among others. Traction on snow and ice is excellent. The interlocking 3-D sipes really do their job on the ice as the tire sticks to the road surface without giving out. Snow, slush and freezing rain grip is equally as impressive.

Naturally, you can look at the tread design with the center rib and see that it is likely to be fun to drive on dry road surfaces. The tire is stable throughout the speed range and provides solid confidence behind the wheel in any weather conditions.

Ride comfort is very good. Because this tire is new to the market we can’t say how well the tread will wear. However, we suspect it will match the performance of the tire, but we will update as time goes by. Overall, this appears to be a nice addition to Yokohama’s winter tire lineup.

  1. we’ve run them for three months. No hint of slipping or gliding, and we’ve had plenty of varied surfaces to test them. I did intensive research on the official ratings for traction on dry – wet – ice and so on and they are measuring up.
