Yokohama Geolandar G93 Tire Review & Rating

Used mainly as original equipment on vehicles like the Suzuki Grand Vitara, the Yokohama Geolandar G93 features all-season traction with a comfortable ride quality. It should be noted that the G93 can also be used as a replacement tire for trucks and SUV’s that use a 225/65R17 fitment.

An all-season tread compound combines with a more aggressive looking 5-rib tread pattern that sports a zig-zag solid continuous center rib for increased handling response, which is a plus for this tire.

Traction on wet pavement is enhanced through the four circumferential grooves, diagonal grooves and added sipes around the tread. It also reduces the risk of hydroplaning in standing water. The addition of sipes further helps with grip on light snow covered roads, which is decent overall, although this is not a winter tire by any means.

The 5-rib tread pattern is designed to lower the road noise and create a smoother ride on the highway, but unfortunately, we feel the noise could be further reduced. A 280 UTQG rating gives pause to concerns over treadlife, which we discuss further in our overall thoughts. Yokohama provides a limited tread warranty on the Geolandar G93.

Overall Thoughts

Yokohama is widely known for producing some of the better tires sold today, however, we feel the G93 is not one of them. Yes, the level of dry/wet traction is more than adequate, and performance on moderate snow is not as bad as many in this class.

What can’t be overlooked is the poor treadlife, which is pretty much a given considering the 280 UTQG rating. We’ve heard drivers mention getting far fewer than expected mileage out of the tread, with some stating it was good for less than 30K miles. In addition, the more aggressive tread design adds to the road noise at highway speeds.

Overall, we rate the G93 near the bottom of the highway all-season class and would not recommend it as a replacement model. Other tires such as the Yokohama YK-HTX, Michelin Defender LTX M/S and Cooper Discoverer HTP among others would make for a much better choice.
