Starfire SF-510 Tire Review & Rating

The Starfire SF-510 is built for all-season highway use on today’s light pickups, SUV’s and crossovers. As a low-cost value based tire, the SF510 is designed to provide dependable performance, a smooth ride and longer treadlife.

An all-season tread compound and asymmetric pattern is M+S rated for increased traction in year-round road and weather conditions. Keep in mind though that this is a highway tire and not one for off-road driving. The tire’s semi-solid center rib enhances steering response while also delivering added on-center feel at higher speeds.

Four larger circumferential grooves and the addition of multiple sipes around the tread work to channel away water for better traction on wet pavement. The added sipes also aid in giving the tire increased traction on snow and slush, as well as driving on icy road surfaces.

A computer-designed variable pitch tread helps to eliminate unnecessary road noise when travelling down the highway. Inside the tread are two steel belts that increase strength and durability, and Starfire has made the SF-510 in a wide range of 15-17 inch sizes. It comes with a limited tread warranty.

Pros

  • Good dry and wet traction
  • Smooth ride
  • Budget-friendly cost

Cons

  • Winter performance
  • Treadlife

Overall Thoughts

The Starfire SF-510 is ideally suited for drivers who are looking for a low-cost alternative to go on their trucks, SUV’s or crossovers. Perhaps you’re needing a tire to simply get you around town, or you plan on getting rid of the vehicle in 10-20K miles and only need a tire to get you by. This is a good option for those types of needs.

You’ll find more than adequate dry and wet traction on this model, and the ride is smooth and comfortable for the most part. That said, there are some areas such as treadlife and performance in winter conditions that could definitely be improved on.

Overall, while you can’t expect to find the type of performance that you would on a Michelin, Continental or other top brand, the SF-510 will get you around and will definitely save you some money at the same time.

  1. I have a 2012 Grand Cherokee With all time 4×4 and I bought a set of these Starfire tires 4 years ago and have 5/32 left on all 4 tires. I drive mostly highway and side roads. They have gotten me through all 4 seasons including snow and ice. I would buy again.

  2. About 1500 miles on these on a dodge V10 3500. About a year olds now. Blew both drivers tires on the rear. Bed was empty, speed 65 mph (to save gas) on I 25 interstate. I now have 4 lt215 85r16 tires that are almost new, but I don’t trust them, So I will remove and replace with 6 new reputable tires, that I can trust.

  3. Poor tires, I have just shy of 11,000 on them and even had them rotated once at about 5,000 as I started noticing significant wear (but it wasnt enough to qualify for the 2/32 they warranty), now they have less than 5/32 left on them and I need to replace…. what a joke…….

  4. I truly thank everyone here who left a comment here about their Starfire tire experiences. I was looking to purchase 8 of these tires for my RV (235/85/R16 E 120R) (Holliday Rambler’s (RV) Manufacturer Tire Specification Tag). The first comment made me excited an a believer I was making the right choice. After reading the rest of the reviews, ..it scared the crap out of me (rubber and tread separation @ 28,000 miles on 10ply E tires). I’m steering clear of these tires.

  5. I currently have 51,000 miles on my Starfire SF-510’s and am ready to replace them They are on a 1999 Suburban and they have been fantastic tires both in ride and winter traction. Also, they lasted much longer than I thought they would. Great tires!

    1. Hi
Its great to learn about your experience using the Starfire SF-510’s for the price of the tire the mileage you’ve been able to achieve is tremendous.

  6. I have 10k on a set of these tires and they are cupping and almost wore out. The are the worst tires I have ever owned and forget driving in the snow with these, they should not have the m & s rating

    1. Hi Sheldo
The issue you’re describing isn’t one that is validated by our research or confirmed by similar accounts from other readers. In fact other users have praised the tires durability. This might be an issue of a defective product particular to your Starfire Tire.

    1. Hi Dave
Please tell us more about your time with these tires. The type of surface you drive on and what vehicle have you equipped these on?

  7. Very very poor tires. I previously had a set of Goodrides that I bought on clearance at Sears and got 52,000 out of them. On this set of Starfires, 1 tire started peeling tread at 28,000 and had to come off. There was enough tread left that should have lasted me atleast another 5-10,000 miles……which is still no total miles at all compared to 52,000. Very very poor constructed tires that peel when there’s tread left. I have another one that needs to come off and they now have about 32,000.
A 10 ply tire ought to be able to be worn clear down before it peels. Will definitely not buy again. Orschelns sold these tires and now I know why they stopped selling any tires. I have purchased good used tires at auctions and have gotten more than 28,000 out of some that cost 10-20.00 each. Starfires SF 510 10 ply tires are very very poor tires.

    1. I bought a 2007 Silverado 1500 HD in April 2017. It came with starfire 510 tires on it, the tires had less than 1000 miles. I’ve put 10,000 miles on it, they are separating now. Poorly made tires.
