Pirelli Winter Sottozero Tire Review & Rating

The Winter Sottozero from Pirelli is the company’s answer to having a winter tire that also provides summer like performance as well. Designed for drivers of sport coupes, sedans and even sporty crossovers, the Sottozero offers a high level of year round traction and handling to go with a smooth and comfortable ride.

Pirelli utilizes exclusive cap and base tread compound technology in this tire that uses two unique compounds. The first layer at the top includes polymers and silica that combine to give the tire enhanced stability on dry or wet road surfaces, while the lower base level is designed to increase tread stiffness for added cornering grip and further tire stability.

The tire’s high density siping in the tread blocks add biting edges that deliver exceptional grip on snow, packed snow and ice, which is an area that is also mentioned by other tire owners. They also help in providing added ride comfort by lowering outside road noise.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that are nylon reinforced for increased strength and durability. A polyester cord body further adds to ride comfort and more even tread wear. Pirelli offers sizes from 16-20 inches, and the tire comes with an H or V-speed rating.

Pros

  • Snow and ice performance is among best in class
  • Outstanding dry and wet traction
  • Cornering grip and stability is as good as it gets for a winter tire
  • Exceptional ride comfort
  • Long lasting tread life

Cons

  • Just a little extra noise at higher speeds on dry pavement

Overall Thoughts

The Pirelli Sottozero sort of feels like an ultra-high performance all-season tire on steroids. Winter traction and grip on snow and ice is among the best in class, while traction and cornering grip on dry or wet pavement in winter or summer is outstanding. Pirelli has managed to produce a tire that truly provides dual purpose use for year round driving, and they’ve done an excellent job at it.

Expect to find outstanding ride comfort and low road noise for the most part. We say that because you may encounter a little road noise at higher speeds on dry pavement due to the tread design. It’s not excessive by any means, but worth mentioning.

Tread life is very good on this model for being a tire that can be driven year round. Overall, the Winter Sottozero is one of the better high performance winter tires you will find today. It offers exceptional performance and value for the money.
