Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 Tire Review & Rating

The Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 is an eye-catching, ultra-high performance winter tire that is designed for drivers of high-end sports cars, luxury sedans and crossovers. Built to provide superior traction, grip and handling on snow, ice and wet roads, this premium quality UHP winter tire also performs well in dry conditions.

A new, harder, advanced tread compound and 3-D sipe technology combine together to produce a tire that gives you more grip, better traction and superior handling when you’re driving in tougher winter weather conditions.

Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 Tire

Every Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 tire has enhanced features including wider grooves, more siping than many other similar tires and a double arrow design that increases traction and gives you even more grip when you’re driving on wet roads or snow and ice.

Longer tread life can be expected when you use these tires for winter use only, because the Winter Sottozero 3’s profile guarantees a uniform footprint that results in more even tread wear.

Sporting rounded shoulders and deeper grooves means that hydroplaning and the challenges presented by wet surfaces are less of a concern for drivers, with many reviews by other owners of these tires stating that even though they were driving after a heavy downpour and through puddles on the road, they felt as if they were driving on a dry surface.

Winter Sottozero 3 tires excel in sub-zero temperatures and provide a comfortable ride, as well as giving a driver good feedback behind the wheel. Traveling on the highway is a smooth experience, and there’s little in the way of noise to distract your driving experience.

Pirelli offers a wide range of 16-21 inch sizes in Sottozero 3, and you’ll find H, V and W-speed ratings. Run-flat sizes are also available, and all tires come with a limited tread warranty.

Pros

  • Traction, braking and acceleration on snow, ice, slush and wet roads is excellent
  • Dry traction, cornering and handling stability on cold pavement is best in class
  • Smooth comfortable ride in colder conditions with very little noise
  • Value for the money

Cons

  • Tread wear could be a bit better

Overall Thoughts

When it comes to ultra-high performance winter tires, Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 has hit the mark in all areas. Whether it’s driving in wet conditions or on deep snow, ice, slush, freezing rain or other elements, they provide dependable traction and handling. In addition, the ride is smooth and comfortable. They absorb most all of the impacts from potholes and other rough pavement without the need to visit the chiropractor afterwards.

Grip, handling and cornering stability in dry conditions are as good as many summer tires, with many high-end vehicle owners stating how they happily use these tires all year round. While we wouldn’t recommend that, it’s a testament to how well this tire performs.

On the negative side, the tread life is shorter than other winter tires if you use them twelve months of the year, or constantly drive on drive dry pavement, so it’s advisable to only use them for their main purpose as a winter tire.

Overall, as high-performance winter tires go, the Sottozero 3 simply ranks right up with the best in class. We’re not alone in our assessment as countless other drivers have said how impressive this tire performs in their reviews and thoughts on this tire as well. It doesn’t disappoint.

  1. We’re putting these tires on our 2015 Buick Encore AWD (215/55r18),Next winter because the OEM Tires are terrible in the snow.
