Nokian WR G3 Tire Review & Rating

Working to improve on the WR G2, the new Nokian WR G3 is built with the newest tire technology to help you drive through the harshest of winter driving conditions. Built for all types of coupes, sedans, minivans and crossovers, this model is one of the few all-weather tires that is also designed for year-round traction and handling in warmer weather as well.

Nokian has created an all-new symmetrically directional tread pattern that better resists hydroplaning on wet pavement, as well as in deeper amounts of slush. We have to say that this tire handles slush as well as any tire on the market today. An added benefit with this tread compound is the addition of canola oil, which increases durability for a little extra treadlife.

The WRG3 also has more silica than their earlier editions. Adding silica is a way to increase the friction and therefore to optimize the wet grip, while also maximizing traction on snow and ice.

Thanks to the unique tread pattern the tires solidly stick to the road surface even on snow and ice so you do not have to worry about driving extremely slow while making turns. They provide you with a more confident feeling behind the wheel that is difficult to measure until you find yourself driving in tough winter conditions.

The tread surface has a Driving Safety Indicator (DSI). DSI numbers tell you the percentage of the tread that is still left inside the main grooves of tire. The DSI system is made for pure safety- when the snow symbol wears, the tires should be replaced by new ones. Nokian offers the WR G3 in 14-19 sizes with speed ratings of T, H, V and W.

Pros

  • Snow/ice/slush/wet handling
  • Overall sense of stability and comfort
  • Value and performance for the price

Cons

  • Handling in corners due to softer sidewalls

Overall Thoughts

You’ll find the Nokian WRG3’s are very good high performance tires with far above average performance in winter weather. Reports from other drivers also show that driving on slightly inclined snowy roads is surprisingly good and that the grip is similar to driving on a dry surface.

Although the tires are all weather, they may have some minor handling issues in the summer and may be a bit noisy under harder cornering. Of course, the softer compound is going to affect cornering and treadlife.

When it comes to value and performance for the cost, the WR G3 ranks among the best on the market. That said, we are still a little more partial to the G2, but the difference is really only minor. Overall the WRG3 is a good investment for drivers who do not want to change their tires throughout the year, yet still want to keep it safe and comfortable while driving on snow, slush, freezing rain and ice. You simply can’t go wrong with adding this tire to your vehicle.

  1. I have a set of 225/50-17 on my 2005 BMW 545 and they are excellent for summer and winter use. I have 80 000 kms on them now and it appears that 100K kms is possible.
