Nitto NT90W Tire Review & Rating
As its first winter tire in the company’s lineup in 2014, the Nitto NT90W is built to deliver solid traction and handling in severe winter conditions. Aimed at coupe, sedan, minivan, crossover and smaller SUV drivers, the NT90W studless winter tire utilizes new technology in creating a more than capable snow tire.
Nitto has engineered one of the more unique tread compounds you’ll find with the NT90W. Not only is the compound silica-infused for increased traction on snow and ice, but Nitto has added crushed walnut shells and bamboo charcoal as well. What? Crushed walnuts and bamboo charcoal in a passenger tire?
The crushed walnut shells add more bite on the ice and snow by acting like a set of mini-studs, while the bamboo charcoal absorbs the thin layer of water off of icy road surfaces to enhance grip. It’s a combination that has proven to work extremely well on this tire.
3D multiwave and 3D interlocking sipes around the tread further increase snow and ice traction. The interlocking sipes, along with reinforced tread blocks, have another benefit in reducing tread flex for improved handling stability on dry or wet road surfaces.
Wide circumferential grooves and numerous lateral grooves aid in evacuating water and slush from the tread for increased grip and a lower risk of hydroplaning. The Nitto NT90W is currently available in a range of 16-20 inch sizes, and all sizes sport a T-speed rating. A limited tread warranty is also included.
Pros

Overall Thoughts
It may have taken Nitto a number of years to come out with their first winter tire, but the wait was worth it as this model simply performs with the best winter tires on the market today. We’ve heard from many drivers of this tire that its performance is similar to the Blizzaks and X-ice winter tires. It’s a feeling that we share as well. Better yet is the fact that you’ll save a substantial amount of money on a full set over what you’d spend on Bridgestone or Michelin.
The NT90W is especially up to the task of going over hard-pack and ice. There’s very little wheel spin, unless you’re too heavy into the throttle of course. In addition, traction in moderate to deep snow is outstanding.
About the only area that you might have any issue with would be wet traction, but that’s pretty common for all winter tires. There’s also a little extra noise on dry pavement, however it’s not overbearing or excessive.
Overall, if you want a set of high-quality winter tires and budget is a concern, or you just want to save some extra money, the NT90W is an excellent solution.
