Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/T Radial Tire Review & Rating

The Sportsman S/T Radial from Mickey Thompson is designed mainly for owners of classic muscle cars, but is also used on various coupes, sedans and light pickups. Built to deliver all-season traction and performance handling, the S/T features a smoother ride and longer lasting tread design.

An all-season M+S rated tread compound sports larger outside shoulder grooves that enhance dry traction and cornering grip. The tire’s continuous center rib provides increased steering response and feel, while also giving the tire added stability throughout the speed range.

Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/T Radial Tire Review

Wet handling performance is enhanced through four circumferential grooves that evacuate water from under the tread and reduce the risk of hydroplaning. The tread makeup gives this tire a smoother ride, as well as eliminating much of the outside road noise.

Inside the tire you’ll find steel belted construction for added strength and durability. A polyester cord body further increases ride comfort and promotes more even treadwear. The tires comes with a T-speed rating and Mickey Thompson provides a limited tread warranty.

Pros

  • Excellent dry and wet traction
  • Smooth and stable control
  • Grip is predictable in the corners
  • Tires ride comfortable and are pretty quiet
  • Old school attractive tread design

Cons

  • Winter handling could be improved

Overall Thoughts

The Sportsman S/T has a lot of similarities to the BFGoodrich Radial T/A. Expect good year-round traction on dry or wet road surfaces. Winter performance could be better, but driving in deep snow and ice is not what this tire was built for.

Cornering grip is very good, and we think it is better than the Radial T/A in that regard. The steering is crisp and responsive. Ride comfort is pretty good for this style of tire, and there is not a lot of distracting road noise to contend with.

Overall, like the BFG T/A, this tire provides the old school raised white letter looks to go along with predictable performance for drivers of all types of muscle cars and trucks. It’s an easy tire to like in that regard.

  1. I running these on my Suzuki Samurai in 245 60r15 and they work great. I have had to use them off-road twice and they do pretty good for street biased tires, the tread blocks are spaced apart enough to clear mud but don’t expect them to be as good as Super Swampers. Can be used on light trails with good grip and perform excellent in the rain.

    1. Hi Albert
Great to hear about experience using the Mickey Thompson Sportsman, our reviewers thoroughly enjoyed their time testing this particular design. The smart design elements incorporated in the tire really make it shine on variety of terrain types which is a sentiment shared by the review team.

  2. Dont buy these expecting grip like a MT Drag R or ET Street radial. These are purely a highway tyre – not for the qtr mile.
