Michelin LTX Winter Tire Review & Rating

The LTX Winter has been developed by Michelin for drivers of heavy-duty or commercial pickups, vans and SUV’s who need a tire that pushes through anything that winter throws their way. With available E load ranges, the LTX is engineered to deliver dependable performance when you need it the most.

Michelin utilizes a high technology cold weather winter tread compound that they call “W/Max”. This compound is specially designed to boost acceleration and braking performance on ice, while providing added firmness when driving on dry or wet surfaces in warmer temperatures.

The symmetric tread design on the LTX is the same design that is on the M/S2. What this means is that this model is made to provide good grip in all types of winter weather conditions, while also maintaining better dry and wet performance. It also features a lower rolling resistance due in part to Michelin’s Green X technology.

Snow and ice traction are enhanced through the tire’s independent tread blocks and 3-D active sipes around the tread that sport over 1,000 biting edges. Driving on wet or slush covered pavement is another area where this tire excels. Four circumferential grooves combine with lateral grooves to expel water and slush away from the tire. The result is increased traction and braking capabilities.

Ride comfort is enhanced with Comfort Control Technology that Michelin is known for. Inside the tire you will find three steel belts with a polyester cord body that add strength and durability to meet the demands for heavy-duty use. A 40,000 mile tread guarantee is included, which is not that common for winter tires.

Pros

  • Snow and ice traction is excellent
  • Outstanding braking on dry, wet, snow or ice
  • Treadlife is very good
  • 40,000 mile warranty

Cons

  • Softer sidewalls reduce cornering performance
  • Would like to see 15 inch sizes available

Overall Thoughts

The LTX Winter is another solid performing tire in the Michelin lineup. You can expect very good snow, slush, rain and ice traction and handling, although we feel that it is just a bit below that of the Blizzaks. Treadlife though is better overall, and that is evidenced by the 40,000 mile tread guarantee.

Another strong area of performance with this tire is its braking and acceleration. The tire stops quickly without sliding. An added benefit is the available 10-ply rating on select sizes that provides added puncture resistance which is nice for those who drive on gravel roads, job sites and other more rugged terrain.

The only negative, and one that may only affect more spirited drivers, is the softer sidewall that reduces cornering power. That said, it is not that bad and we really don’t expect a winter tire to corner like a high performance summer tire, especially on light commercial applications. Overall, this model is a very good choice for those who drive a pickup or SUV and need a heavy-duty or solid handling snow tire.
