Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Tire Review & Rating

Michelin has engineered the Pilot Sport Cup for serious sports car drivers who are looking for the highest track performance while also having a tire that meets DOT street legal requirements.

The race-inspired tread compound is optimized for on-track performance. It utilizes a dual side by side compound and asymmetric tread pattern that delivers maximum dry and wet traction at all speeds.

Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Tire Review

The tire’s outside shoulder rib increases cornering grip and provides lightening quick steering response. Once these tires heat up they provide glue-like grip in the corners, which is something that is also mentioned in countless driver reviews and ratings on this model.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that are reinforced with Michelin’s exclusive Banded At Zero technology. This increases braking and acceleration capabilities, while also enhancing cornering performance. Sizes range from 18-20 inches, and a run-flat version is also available.

Pros

  • Outstanding dry traction
  • Cornering grip is exceptional
  • Consistent track performance
  • Ride comfort is good

Cons

  • Not the best for wet traction but that is expected

Overall Thoughts

Driving on the Sport Cup can be an exhilarating experience to say the least. Once they heat up a bit, dry traction and cornering grip is simply outstanding. While not a full-out race tire, the performance is both consistent and very high, and you’ll get much more tread life from it as well.

Street performance is pretty good on this tire. Wet traction is decent, but you’ll want to slow down and take it a bit easier for obvious reasons.

Overall, while we like the Nitto NT 555R II Extreme and Pirelli P Zero Corsa System as best in class, the Sport Cup is a very good choice in street/track tires as well.
