Michelin Cross Terrain SUV Tire Review & Rating

The Cross Terrain SUV from Michelin is built to provide all-season traction and handling to go with a luxury car-like ride quality. Developed for drivers of all types of SUV’s and light trucks, the Cross Terrain features year-round performance on the highway, as well as capable light terrain off-road capabilities.

An all-season silica enhanced tread compound uses Michelin’s Dura Black technology that keeps the sidewall looking black and sharp throughout the life of the tread. The unique tread design and interlocking sipes are optimized to not only increase traction in all types of weather and road conditions, but to also provide exceptional car-like ride comfort. Many drivers have commented that this tire is one of the most comfortable sport utility vehicles tires in any class.

Michelin Cross Terrain SUV Tire Review

The tire’s square contact patch and enhanced casing system combine with continuous shoulder ribs to increase dry traction and cornering grip, while improving steering response and reducing outside road noise.

Circumferential grooves and interlocking zig-zag sipes around the tread provide wet surface traction and handling, as well as reducing the risk of hydroplaning. The sipes give the tire its biting edges for better grip on wet and snow covered roads. You’ll find it also provides better than average traction on icy roads at the same time.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts and a polyester cord body that go along with Michelin’s Bead Tension System. Together, it enhances tire stability and further increases ride quality. Sizes are available from 16-18 inches, and Michelin guarantees the tire for 65,000 miles.

Pros

  • Dry and wet traction are outstanding
  • Winter handling is very good
  • Exceptional ride comfort
  • Long lasting treadlife

Cons

  • Would like to see just a bit quicker steering response

Overall Thoughts

Update: Since our review was published, Michelin has discontinued making the Cross Terrain SUV.

It’s easy to see why the Cross Terrain SUV tires are used on some of today’s luxury SUV’s. They provide excellent all-around performance and a long lasting treadlife. Dry and wet traction is among the best in class. They handle beautifully and offer exceptional stability at all speeds. The only thing we can remotely mention as being average is the steering response. It could be just a hair quicker.

The ride quality is simply outstanding on this tire. We find it’s like riding on a touring tire in a luxury sedan. You don’t feel all the bumps, and you certainly do not hear all the irritating outside road noise.

Treadwear is very good on the Cross Terrain. We’ve heard other drivers mention they are seeing 60,000-80,000 miles out of the tread, which is very good for this type of tire. Michelin stands behind it with a 65,000 mile warranty as well. Overall, this is an excellent highway all-season tire that provides car-like ride comfort and performance.

  1. What tire replaced the Cross Terrain tire. My tires are 9 years old and I have 24,200 miles on my Ford Escape. I have been told to replace them even though they show no wear.
