Kumho Ecsta AST Tire Review & Rating

The Ecsta AST is another high performance all-season tire in the Kumho lineup that features aggressive looks, good performance, and quality ride comfort. Built for drivers of sport coupes and sedans, the AST is priced especially for those on a tight budget.

The all-season tread compound sports advanced carbon black into a directional tread pattern for year round performance and handling. Dry surface grip is enhanced with the tire’s wider shoulder blocks, while steering response and stability is increased with a center rib.

Kumho Ecsta AST Tire Review

Wet surface handling is aided with cross grooves and a multi-sipe design to increase hydroplane resistance. However, as you can see by our comments below we feel the tire could use help in this area.

Inside the tire you’ll find an advanced twin steel belt design that features high-tensile steel and jointless nylon cap technology that provides reinforcement to the tread and better high speed stability. The sidewalls use a filler material which increases cornering grip and reduces tire distortion.

Kumho has also added a rim protector to the sidewall to prevent damage to expensive custom wheels. Sizes range from 15-18 inches, and there is a 50,000 mile treadlife warranty included as well.

Pros

  • Excellent cornering grip and dry surface traction
  • Good ride comfort
  • Inexpensive tire that provides good value for the money

Cons

  • Tend to get noisy as they wear down
  • Snow and ice traction could be better

Overall Thoughts

The Ecsta AST has good dry pavement abilities. It handles and corners well for an all-season tire, and delivers very good stability at higher speeds. In addition, the ride is comfortable.

On the other hand, traction could be a bit better on wet, snow and ice covered pavement. We’ve heard from a few drivers speaking of hydroplane issues in heavy downpours.

Overall, the AST features pretty good performance for the lower price it carries. We give it a middle of the class ranking.
