Hankook Winter I Pike RS W419 Tire Review & Rating

The Hankook Winter I*Pike RS W419 is designed to replace the earlier W409 winter tire. Built for drivers of coupes, sedans, minivans and smaller crossovers, the W419 features the latest technology that is designed to compete with some of the more expensive winter tires when it comes to quality and performance.

Hankook engineers made improvements in many key areas to this newest tire, from an optimized tread footprint to an all-new pattern that reduces the risk of hydroplaning, and much more.

Aqua Slant technology is responsible for major performance enhancements in the area of water evacuation. The 3D sipes on the footprint work as a stabilizer by preventing the blocks to move. The Hankook RS W419 has a sophisticated snow slit design that makes braking and traction on icy road surfaces safer and much more efficient.

The tire’s footprint uses a revolutionary Husky Slit and Husky Claw Edge technology which mimics the print on the rubber by that of a Siberian husky. In addition, there is a high-silica tread compound and 3D sipes, all of which results in maximized ice braking and an improved grip on ice covered pavement.

Comfort is also an area where this tire performs well. That said, road noise is a little more than you often find on other winter tires.

Inside the tire are two steel belts for increased strength, and Hankook has added a high hardness bead filler that enhances steering response and overall handling. The equilibrium carcass line helps to reduce tire deformation, while also providing added sidewall stiffness for better handling. Sizes range from 14-17 inches and come with a T speed rating.

Pros

  • Excellent snow and ice traction
  • Reliable grip in wet and slush conditions
  • Treadwear

Cons

  • Dry road handling
  • Little extra road noise

Overall Thoughts

Overall, the Hankook I Pike W419 delivers reliable winter weather performance. It’s also priced to appeal to budget-minded drivers looking for solid performance at a good price. That said, handling and cornering on dry pavement is a little soft. We’d like to see a stiffer sidewall, but this is not a flaw that would prevent us from buying this tire. Overall, a middle of the pack performer that does its job.
