Hankook Kinergy GT H436 Tire Review & Rating

Developed for touring all-season use, the Hankook Kinergy GT H436 is aimed at drivers of sport coupes and luxury sedans who are looking for a high performance tire, while still maintaining a quiet and comfortable ride. This model is also used as original equipment on vehicles such as the Hyundai Tucson and Sonata among others.

Hankook uses a high grip silica tread compound on the Kinergy GT that is M+S rated for added traction on dry, wet or snow covered pavement. A wider reinforced steel belt layer helps provide increased stability, in addition to enhanced cornering and handling performance. We’ve heard a number of driver reviews mention this as being a real plus for this model.

Four wide circumferential grooves evacuate water and increase traction on wet road surfaces, while the tire’s center rib gives a boost to braking and handling. Lateral grooves in the tread combine with the circumferential grooves to effectively prevent hydroplaning, which is another positive for the H436.

Inside the tire you’ll find two steel belts with a jointless full cover reinforced belt for better higher speed stability and increased overall durability. Finally, a high-stiffness bead filler quickens steering response and handling.

Hankook offers a wide range of 15-19 inch sizes for the Kinergy GT H436, which comes with either a T, H or V-speed rating. It’s backed by a 60K mile tread warranty.

Pros

  • Good dry and wet traction
  • Quicker steering response and a nice on-center feel
  • Ride is comfortable and very quiet
  • Better than average treadlife

Cons

  • Winter weather traction and handling is far below average

Overall Thoughts

While the Hankook Kinergy GT is perhaps best known for its use as OE on a number of new cars and crossovers, it is also a more than capable replacement as well. You’ll find that traction is very good on dry and wet roads, and the handling/cornering performance is more than up to the task. Hankook placed an emphasis on ride comfort and it shows here. The ride is quiet and comfortable on all but the harshest pavement.

On the other hand, this is not a tire without faults. The biggest issue would have to be its poor traction on snow and ice. Anything over an inch or two will likely present traction, braking and acceleration problems. We’ve heard this mentioned by many drivers of this tire. It simply lacks the grip you need in rough winter weather conditions.

Overall, if winter performance is not a big issue, this tire rides and drives quite well. While we wouldn’t put it in the same league as the Michelin Premier A/S, Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season Plus or Cooper CS5 Grand Touring among other top models, we feel it rates in the upper half of this class.

  1. Don’t waste your money! I bought my car new in July 2020. With only 13,000 miles, I had to replace my Hankook KINERGY GT H436 Tires because the tread was 2/32. These are rated for 70K miles, yet Hankook won’t issue a credit for tread, only defect. Buy ANY other tire!!!

  2. 2019 Honda CRV EX-L bought new. Had to replace them at 30,000 miles bars showing. I rotated every 6,000 miles. I am not a aggressive driver at 68. Worst tire I have ever owned.

  3. Same experience as most people previously noted. 29,000 on my 2017 CR-V and they are ready for replacement. I also find them to be noisy on a lot of different Freeway conditions. Which is where a great deal of my driving occurs. These came with the car, but I certainly won’t be buying a new set.

  4. Bought a used 2015 Hyundai Sonata several years ago with Hankook Kinergy GT tires (215/55HR17). At 30,400 miles (half the warranted 60,000), tread is worn and dealer recommends replacement due to dry rot.

  5. Aweful tires, I purchased my 2020 Ford Explorer a week ago and these Hankook KINERGY GT have me all over the road and I constantly have to correct the steering… these are by far the worst tires I have ever rode on !!!

  6. I have a 2018 tuscon with 18,000 miles on it and at 70mph on the fwy had catastrophic failure of my rear passenger side tire…the ENTIRE tire came off the rim n was rolling down the fwy behind me. As an extra thrill, because there was no tire the brakes had nothing to grab onto to stop me…I guess that’s what emergency brakes are for. Not the dealer nor hankook would do anything except say you need to buy a new tire. Buyer beware .

    1. The brakes do not grab the tire silly.
      They grab the rim.
Sounds like you maybe had the wrong size tire on to me.

  7. I have had these tires on the car for a little over a year. There is approximately 20,000 miles on them. We are told they need replacing. I am disappointed in this tire. I was told they would last a lot longer. (60,000)
I hope the company will make good on the warranty.

  8. Tires were OEM on my VW Passat. They were quiet, comfortable on the highway, and had good dry traction and decent wet traction. However, they were horrible on any snow or ice. Also had to replace them at 40k Miles. Also had a tire defect @ 5k miles, which made the car vibrate at highway speeds. Would not recommend them for anyone who lives in a cold climate.

  9. My 2018 CRV tires are almost down to the wear bar after 26,000 miles! These tires are rated to 70K. Really bad tires and they don’t warrant them if they’re original equipment tires. I blame Hankook for making false claims AND Honda for selling us cheap tires.

  10. I got about 40,000 out of mine and now already need tires.. how can they rate for 70,000 when they clearly do not hold up that long

  11. Has anyone else had the same experience with the Hnakook Kinergy GT tires. Mine came with my 2017 GTi and seem to have worn the tread down to the wear bar extremely fast compared to other tires I’ve had. Anybody using the Michelins Pilot I was wondering if those treads last longer than these Hankooks.

  12. I have a 2018 Honda CRV Touring with 29,000 miles on it. I have had all required service done on it up to this point. I noticed that the tires have been wearing at a fast rate and that they are already at the wear bar!
The Service Tech would not rotate the tires because the rear is worse than the front. Honda did an Alignment to make sure the car spec and it was ok (I have the data)
I have contacted Handkook and the warranty said they don’t cover OEM tires for wear…wow! Must be nice to produce a part and not cover it!!
All 4 tires need to be replaced.
Believe me I’m not finished with this.

    1. Same here. 29,500 miles on my 2017 Touring CRV. Dry rotted and worn down to a point that they will not repair them. I live in NM so I thought maybe the sun wears them out quicker but it seems to be a common story with these. Need to replace all 4 tires. Pretty frustrating.

    2. Ditto. 2018 CRV. 26,000 miles . Driven extremely conservatively. Tires already need replacing. This is a terrible product that deserves a recall.

  13. The Hancock tires came with my lease. I have 23,000 miles and it blew out on State Road 95. I called the dealership about the warranty and they said it only covered normal wear and tear. They said it must have been a nail or cut in the tire. My tire blew out on both sides of the tire so unless I ran over two nails at the same time driving 70 miles an hour on 95 that is crap.

    1. These tires are terrible!!
They’re rated for 70,000 miles but mine have worn to the wear bar at 29,000mi…they won’t do anything

  14. OEM on my 2017 Honda CR-V EX FWD. Lately experiencing noticeable “wobbly” noise at city speeds. Dealer’s mechanic claims tires are “excessively cupped” — at 33,000 miles?? I have not been to an independent shop for a second opinion. But judging by the sound itself, I do not have a favorable opinion of Hankook tires. Will probably swap out for Continentals or Michelins — brands with a pedigree.

    1. These tires are terrible!!
They’re rated for 70,000 miles but mine have worn to the wear bar at 29,000mi…they won’t do anything
