Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice Tire Review & Rating

Built to deliver winter weather traction and grip, the Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice features the latest in Goodyear tread technology. Developed for drivers of coupes, sedans, minivans and smaller SUV’s, the Ultra Grip sports a unique Ice Over Winter silica enhanced tread compound that is layered to provide a continuous winter compound as the tread wears down.

A V-shaped tread pattern and directional tread design is built to take on tough winter conditions. The independent tread blocks are siped to provide additional biting edges for enhanced grip on snow and ice. They also aid in evacuating slush and water from under the tire.

Snow platform indicator bars let you see when the tire is wearing down. Other wear bars on the tread indicate when the tire is completely worn down.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts for additional strength and stability. Goodyear recommends purchasing this tire in sets of four for optimal tire performance. The Ultra Grip meets the standards for severe snow service requirements.

Pros

  • Good overall traction in all types of winter conditions
  • Wet surface handling is very good
  • Excellent ride comfort

Cons

  • Hard cornering grip
  • Tires need to be kept balanced

Overall Thoughts

The Ultra Grip Ice has been around for a number of years now. Expect to get good overall traction in a variety of winter driving conditions. Ride comfort is pretty good as well. Dry surface grip is an area we would like to see improved upon. Despite the aggressive look, it seems the sidewall is a bit too softfor harder cornering. Also, some drivers have mentioned they have needed to balance their tires more often than usual. Overall, the tire does its job, but we feel that newer technology from Bridgestone, Continental and Michelin have started to leave this model behind. We rank it in the middle of the pack for a winter tire.

  1. Could the comments or reviews mentioning poor cornering performance partly be related to drivers who purchase narrower sizes for their winter tires?
