Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT Tire Review & Rating

The Ultra Grip Ice WRT uses Goodyear’s Winter Reactive Technology that is engineered to provide exceptional traction in rough winter conditions. Designed for drivers of coupes, sedans, minivans, crossovers and pickups, the WRT sports the latest in tire technology for driving in changing winter conditions.

A Winter Grip tread compound that is exclusive to Goodyear, combines with a directional tread pattern to provide enhanced traction on snow and ice in below freezing temperatures. The tire’s sweeping grooves evacuate water and slush from under the tread for increased handling and hydroplane resistance.

Braking and acceleration are one of the true tests of how well a winter tire performs, and with Goodyear’s Winter Reactive Technology, this tire does the job as good as most any winter tire in this class. 2-D sipes in the center zone maximize stopping and starting performance whether on snow or ice, while unique 3-D TreadLock Technology blades along the outer shoulder zones further increase traction and lock together for improved grip when cornering or turning.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that are nylon reinforced for added strength and durability throughout the speed range. A polyester cord body delivers ride comfort and promotes more even treadwear. An added rim protector prevents damage from curbs and other obstructions.

Pros

Overall Thoughts

The Ultra Grip Ice WRT are arguably one of the better studdable snow tires available today. They are certainly the best Goodyear’s we’ve reviewed. Traction on snow, hard-packed snow and covered ice is outstanding. They grip the elements like a summer tire grips pavement. Acceleration and braking is excellent. You really have to try to break these tires loose in order to slide around on the snow.

The only area we can see improving on would be bare ice traction. It’s adequate, but could be just a little better. Grip on dry or wet pavement is very good, as is steering response. They basically provide traction and handling like a high performance all-season tread design. Ride comfort is good, but this tire is a bit harder than Michelin’s X-Ice or Bridgestone’s Blizzak tires.

Overall, this model ranks in the upper half of this class. It provides excellent performance and inspires confidence behind the wheel. We can highly recommend it.

Warranty

Goodyear provides a limited tread warranty on the WRT. Tire uniformity is guaranteed for the first year or first 2/32 inch of wear. Materials and workmanship are warranted for 6-years and  include free replacement during the first year or first 2/32 inch of wear. A prorated amount is given for theremaining time period or down to the final 2/32 inch of tread depth.
