Goodyear Wrangler SR-A Tire Review & Rating

The Goodyear Wrangler SR-A all-season highway tire is mainly used for original equipment on a wide variety of new pickup trucks. However, it is also a popular replacement model for drivers of SUV’s and crossovers as well.

The all-season tread compound utilizes Goodyear’s WetTrac technology to go with a symmetrical tread pattern to provide added traction on wet surfaces, as well as on gravel, mud and light snow. Wide circumferential grooves and zig-zag sipes around the tread evacuate water from under the tire and reduce the risk of hydroplaning, although this is not a strength for this tire.

Goodyear Wrangler SR-A Tire Review

Dry pavement grip is enhanced through the tire’s independent tread blocks, lateral grooves and wider contact patch. The SR-A maintains a quiet ride with its tread design that is designed to resist vibrations and lower outside road noise, which is an area frequently mentioned in driver reviews as one this tire does very well.

Inside the tire you will find two high tensile steel belts that provide added strength and durability. Goodyear has created this model in P-metric and LT sizes, as well as heavy duty D and E load ranges. You’ll find 15-20 inch sizes available, and it comes backed with up to a 50K mile warranty.

Pros

  • Traction on dry pavement, gravel and dirt is very good
  • Tires ride comfortably and have low road noise
  • Crisp steering response

Cons

  • Wet and winter handling could be better
  • Treadlife has been an issue for some drivers

Overall Thoughts

Although the SR-A is mainly used as original equipment on a variety of pickups, it has become a popular choice for all types of trucks and SUV’s. Traction and grip on dry pavement is very good for this model. Steering response is quick, and ride quality is equally as impressive.

However, far too many have complained about wet surface handling, as well as traction on snow and ice. It’s simply lacking when compared against other top models in this class. A shorter than expected treadlife has also been an issue for some drivers in ratings on this model.

Overall, we like this tire for its comfort and dry surface performance, but if you drive on wet roads the majority of the time, or live in an area which sees quite a bit of snow and ice, you may want to look at a different tire. Tires like the Yokohama YK-HTX or Michelin Defender LTX M/S would provide higher performance and make a better option.

  1. I have a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 I bought new with 24k on the factory installed Goodyear Wranglers and I am told they need to be replaced due to being worn out. Obviously I don’t put on a lot of miles and don’t trailer things. Very disappointed with their wear life. Looks like I’ll be buying something else to replace them.

  2. I bought a ram 1500 year 2020 with these tires on. Blew one out at 10000kms on the rear drivers while coming home from work on a highway. Tire was sent away and Goodyear insists it’s a compression flat. It blew up so bad it ripped the cowling out from underneath the wheel well. Can’t figure out how the rear tire blew and not the front one if I hit something. The worst tire I have ever had the pleasure of using on a vehicle. These tires are so bad I will not even give them away.

  3. Just bought a third set of Wrangler SRAs for my Ram 1500. 65,000 on the first set, 62500 on the second set. Currently looking at 40,000. Have no complaints. Thought about a set of Continentals, but if it ain’t broke…..
Also get a little north of 27 mpg with the eco diesel.

    1. They came standard on my 2017 GMC 2500 truck. They are not the best in snow or wet surfaces. They are excellent on dry payment and are very quiet. I tow a 5th wheel trailer and like the tires for towing, but, am looking at Bridgestone REVO 3 to replace the Goodyears.

  4. Will never own another Goodyear tire. Wrangler SRAs on my Denali 2500hd. 27k miles and they were toast. One tire completely blew up while pulling my 5th wheel. Goodyear offered very little to replace other than a pro rated offer and haggled on giving me a deal on the other 3. I went with Michelins and can’t believe the difference. The blown tire also did body damage to my truck which Goodyear argued with me about and refused to discuss if I continued with the tire claim. One or the other they told me. GM needs to choose a better tire for their new line of trucks as these are all junk.

  5. I know from my 2014 ram 1500, that these tires had to be replaced @ 23k miles, my 2018 ram 1500 came with the same exact tire and proactively rotated them every 3k miles along with my oil change at my local dealership, knowing the life of the tire was very poor. I currently have 22k miles on my ram 1500 and I know they’re not going to last past 30k miles. My local dealership told me to take it up with Goodyear, any chance there will be any monetary recourse?

  6. tread life on the wrangler SR-A is absolutely terrible. Wet traction also terrible. If they came on your vehicle fine, run em till they die. But DO NOT waste your money on buying them. Much better tires out there for the money

  7. Now I understand why people are changing out these tires on brand new vehicles. I have a Ram 1500. They are absolute junk. Ok if all you do is city and highway but stay off gravel roads. These tires will puncture very easily. The sidewalks are paper thin. I have had flats on all 4 tires from gravel roads. Stay away from these tires.

  8. I bought a new 2017 GMC Sierra 2500 that came with the SR-A LT265/70R18 124S E VSB and currently have 98,000 miles. Has been a great tire , quiet comfortable ride and plan to replace them with the same tire!
