General Altimax Arctic Tire Review & Rating

Designed to provide exceptional winter traction and performance, the Altimax Arctic from General Tire uses the latest in winter tire technology to get you through even the worst of winter road conditions. Developed for drivers of coupes, sedans, minivans and SUV’s, the Altimax Arctic also includes theoption of using studs for maximum snow and ice traction.

A natural rubber and silica tread compound makes the tread more flexible so that it provides exceptional traction even in the coldest of temperatures, as well as in wet weather. The 270-degree siping around the tread increases traction on snow, slush and wet pavement, while leaving you feeling more confident behind the wheel.

Reactive Contour Technology and a center stability rib add straight line stability on dry road surfaces, while also enhancing wet road traction and reducing the risk of hydroplaning. This new technology allows the tire to better react to varying road conditions and maintain optimal tread surface contact. It also increases cornering performance, as well as acceleration and braking.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that are reinforced with spirally wrapped nylon for added strength and durability. They also increase treadlife by promoting more even tread wear. For the best performance, General recommends installing the Arctic tires in sets of four.

  1. Just got a set for the better halves summer/winter convertible Eclipse GS. If your gonna have a mishap, it’s better to do it in your least valuable vehicle. To make it more winter time savy these tires are a must. Pretty sure she’ll feel more comfortable in it after getting them installed.

  2. I just bought a set of 4 through WALMART – for around $335 installed 185/60R14’s for my 92 NA Miata. Initial impression: I like them! Tire feels soft, but very nimble coming from a 195/50R15 BFG sportcomp2. Dare I say it, but I think I like the soft side wall feeling better? No Snow or Ice yet just 30 degree weather so far. These travel real fwy speeds very nice without studs. These tires make my miata feel like turn in is only a thought away. Very light handling with very low effort. Just what the Doctor ordered to cure my winter time blues! Will post up more after I have spent some quality time with them. Cheers!

  3. I bought a set of these tires in the winter of 2014 / 2015 and I was amazed at how awesome they were. I live in central Wisconsin and we get a lot of snow and just plain nasty winter weather, these tires perform beautifully. The winter I got these we had record setting snow falls and record setting cold weather over 30 days below zero, the frost that year was 8 feet deep people’s water pipes and sewer lines were freezing. The very day I got them it was snowing so I decided to test them out on some unplowed roads when cornering I would mash the gas trying to get the car to spin out, the tires never let me down the car drove like it was on rails. One day I did hit a patch of black ice when trying to slow down to turn onto a different road the car did slide past my turn but what amazed me is it never slid to the side it stayed completely straight the most amazing thing about that is the turn off was in the middle of a large curve and the road I was leaving was tipped with the curve kind of like a race track only not that tipped, you would think the car would slide to the side with the tip of the road but it didn’t. also a few times on very smooth ice it did break traction starting out but once again the car didn’t “walk” to the sides at all which is very common for front wheel drives when breaking traction, even starting on an incline when turning right away the car didn’t “walk” to the sides if you broke traction.
Bottom Line I love these tires and I would recommend them to anyone. I think they would be a hard tire to out preform.
