General AmeriTrac Tire Review & Rating

Built for pickups and SUV’s, the AmeriTrac from General is designed to deliver all-season traction and handling, as well as a longer treadlife. Also used as original equipment on trucks like the Chevy Silverado, Dodge Ram and Ford F-150 among others, the AmeriTrac has been a popular model in the General tire lineup for several years now.

An all-season tread compound and symmetric tread pattern sports increased dry traction through its continuous center rib and shoulder ribs. This also enhances steering response and tire stability, which is not bad at all on this tire. The tread is optimized to minimize road noise and give a more comfortable ride quality.

Wet handling performance is addressed through the tire’s four circumferential grooves. These grooves, along with independent tread blocks, channel away water from under the tread and reduce the risk of hydroplaning. It also provides added bite on snow covered road surfaces.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that add strength and durability to the tire. A polyester cord body increases ride comfort and promotes more even treadwear. General offers sizes in 16 and 17 inches on the AmeriTrac.

Pros

  • Very good dry and wet traction
  • Steering is responsive
  • Ride is smooth and comfortable and without a lot of road noise

Cons

  • Would like to see better treadlife
  • Winter weather handling

Overall Thoughts

The AmeriTrac is your basic all-season highway tire that you find as standard equipment on many of today’s pickups, vans and even a few SUV’s. Unfortunately, we would not replace a worn out set with another one. Sure, you can expect to find good dry and wet traction from the tire, and the ride is ok as well. It is the downsides that make the difference.

Tread life is an area where this model disappoints the most. Too many drivers in their reviews and ratings have said the same thing; treadlife needs big improvements. Winter weather driving is also another area that this tire falls woefully short.

Overall, we rank this tire in the lower half of this class. A better choice in a General tire would be the Grabber HTS60, or if you are looking for other top models for an all-season truck or SUV tire you might look at the Yokohama YK-HTX or the Michelin Defender LTX M/S.
