General Grabber AT2 Tire Review & Rating

The General Grabber AT2 sports impressive all-terrain traction, and a unique studdable tread design for outstanding deep snow grip. Engineered for drivers of all types of pickups and SUV’s, the AT2 is built to provide not only high performance off-road, but better handling and ride comfort on the street as well.

The tread compound General uses is made to reduce chips and cuts, and when combined with the symmetric tread pattern, provides increased traction on all types of terrain. Grip and traction is what sets this tire apart from many of the leading competitor all-terrain brands. The AT2 includes tread blocks with additional traction edges and multiple sipes around the tread to add more bite in snow, slush and mud, which this tire does an excellent job at.

General Grabber AT2 Tire Review

The AT2 is designed to accept metallic studs for proven deep snow traction and handling in even the worst of any snow storms. Even without studs this tire is built to perform in the snow. It features the mountain/snowflake symbol which means it is severe storm rated and meets the same standards as a dedicated winter tire.

What may be surprising to many drivers is how quiet this tire is, in addition to the overall ride comfort, despite the aggressive tread design. This is due in part to multi-tread block sizes and the computer-optimized acoustic tread pattern. They combine to minimize road noise, which is an area that many drivers have mentioned in their tire reviews on this model.

Inside the tread you find two steel belts and a two-ply polyester cord body that adds more strength and durability, while also providing added ride comfort and a longer tread life. General backs up this model with a 60,000 mile tread guarantee, which is one of the better warranties in this class.

Pros

  • Excellent traction in heavy snow, ice, mud, dirt and gravel
  • Responsive steering and stability
  • Tough sidewalls provide excellent puncture resistance
  • Outstanding treadwear and a 60,000 mile warranty

Cons

  • Road noise at highway speeds
  • Wet traction
  • Ride is rougher than many A/T tires

Overall Thoughts

This General tire delivers excellent traction in all types of terrain. The snow traction you’ll get is exceptional, regardless of whether it is just a light dusting or a massive 18 inch snowstorm. Traction on ice and hardpack is equally impressive. Handling and stability is also another plus.

Naturally, road noise is a little more pronounced than other lesser aggressive all-terrain models at highway speeds, but it not a big issue, which has been noted by numerous other drivers as well. The tougher sidewalls mean the ride will be a bit rougher, and that’s the case here. Traction on wet pavement is ok, but not as good as many others.

Treadwear is among the best in this class and General provides a nice warranty as well. The tread simply wears like iron.

Overall, it’s easy to see why drivers have had such good praise for this tire over the years. It is simply one of the better on and off road tires on the market.

  1. I have driven Ram 1500’s for 25 years. I have had BF Goodrich, Nitto’s, and most recently Toyo’s All the years I loved my BF Goodrich, but they seem to not be of good quality as they used to be, so I switched to the Nitto and then Toyo. All 3 of these were great disappointments in the snow and rain. Slippage was a big problem on wet pavement and chains were necessary when I was in deep snow.
So when the search went on I came down to the Cooper tire or the Grabber. Why did I go with the Grabber? I could not find a Cooper tire number one, but one test showed the grabber stopping much sooner than any other all-season in it’s class at highway speeds.
I now have 5000 miles on the Grabbers, been through rain, mud and snow. Brother am I impressed. First off no rear end slippage in the rain. Mud, well in our southern Iowa red clay mud, nothing works. Even my tractor. But now I got a chance in 6″ of snow, pulling a small trailer with my quad on board. These tires rock. Awesome in the snow.
Only criticism is the road noice. A steady whir, but nothing the radio can’t drown out. Great tires, highly recommended at this point. We’ll see at 40,000 miles.
