Falken Espia EPZ Tire Review & Rating

The Falken Espia EPZ is the company’s newest winter tire that is designed for drivers of all types of coupes and sedans. Sporting an exclusive dual tread pattern, the EPZ features both an “ice face” and “snow face” tread design to maximize winter traction and performance.

The unique fiberglass reinforced winter tread compound utilizes an anti-aging agent to keep the tire from succumbing to the effects of UV rays, as well as keeping the rubber pliable and functioning at the highest level.

With Falken’s dual purpose tread design, ice and snow grip is increased through the tire’s wider center tread and lateral shoulder tread grooves. The ice face portion of the tread increases traction on ice, while the snow face provides more grip on snowy road surfaces.

Falken has also added their exclusive Canyon Sipe Technology, which provides added grip and bite in all types of winter conditions. The zig-zag sipes are on the inside of the tread block and angled to enhance tread flex and increase overall performance. A shoulder-edge wave sipe helps eliminate the tire from wandering.

Inside the tire you will find steel belted construction for added strength and better durability. It also promotes more even tread wear and longer tire life.

Pros

  • Excellent traction on all types of winter road conditions
  • Straight line braking and acceleration is above average
  • Ride comfort is very good
  • Value for the money is among best in class

Cons

  • Dry cornering performance

Overall Thoughts

The EPZ only provides good performance, but it is also costs much less than many winter tires on the market today. Traction and handling on snow, ice, sleet and other conditions is very good. For spirited drivers the cornering performance is going to disappoint.

The tire’s softer sidewall makes for a little mushy handling when cornering athigher speeds. Braking and acceleration are both very nice on this tire, and the ride is comfortable and fairly quiet. Overall, the value for the money is definitely a strong point with this Falken snow tire.
