Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D Tire Review & Rating

The SP Winter Sport 3D is one of Dunlop’s high performance winter tires that is built to provide exceptional traction and handling in all types of winter weather conditions. Engineered for drivers of sport coupes, sedans and crossovers, the Winter Sport 3D not only provides exceptional winter performance, but features a smooth and comfortable ride to go with a longer tread life.

A winter tread compound is enhanced with silica and developed to be more flexible in below freezing temperatures. The result is increased traction and grip on snow, ice and other tough winter conditions when the temps get very cold. The directional tread pattern and interlocking 3D sipes in the tire’s shoulder blocks add to dry pavement traction and cornering grip.

Two circumferential grooves and intermediate tread blocks enhance wet and slush covered performance by channeling away water and reducing the risk of hydroplaning. The middle of the tread design is where the sipes are placed to give this tire its excellent starting and stopping abilities on snow and ice. Other drivers have made note of how well this tire accelerates and stops like it wasn’t even driving on snow or ice.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that utilize Dunlop’s JointLess Band nylon reinforcement for added strength and durability. It also provides increased stability throughout the speed zone. The polyester cord body further increases ride comfort and overall treadwear. Dunlop offers sizes from 15-21 inches, as well as H, V and W-speed ratings.

Overall Thoughts

Dunlop has engineered the Winter Sport 3D into one of the better performance snow tires on the market. It ranks right up there with the Michelin Alpin PA3 and the Pirelli Sottozero models. Dry and wet traction and cornering are outstanding, and you’ll find crisp steering response for a winter tire.

Snow and ice traction are excellent, with this tire making easy work of light and deep snow handling. It doesn’t hydroplane on slush or cold wet pavement. Ice traction is very good, although we would like to see a little more cornering grip on the ice at higher speeds. Then again, that’s just us. Taking it a bit easier on the ice would be a more prudent call.

The Winter Sport 3D provides excellent driving comfort, which is often mentioned in driver reviews of this tire. Road noise is minimal as well. Expect very good treadlife out of this model. Overall, this Dunlop tire is one of the best in this class and doesn’t disappoint in its performance.

Warranty

Dunlop provides a limited tread warranty on the Winter Sport. Tire uniformity is guaranteed for the first year or first 2/32 inch of wear. Materials and workmanship are warranted for 6-years and include free replacement during the first year or first 2/32 inch of wear. A prorated amount is given for the remaining time period or down to the final 2/32 inch of tread depth.
