Continental ContiTrac SUV Tire Review & Rating

Providing dependable all-season on-road performance with a smoother and more comfortable ride is the goal of the Continental ContiTrac SUV. Built for both small and larger sized sport utility vehicles, this tire has also been used as original equipment on the Ford Expedition and Explorer.

An all-season tread compound is matched with a computer optimized and molded tread pattern that is designed to maximize dry and wet driving performance. It is also engineered to provide increased comfort and a longer overall tread life. Although mainly an on road tire, it can be taken off road in light terrain for those occasional weekend fishing or boating trips.

Continental ContiTrac SUV Tire Review

Wet traction is enhanced through the tire’s four circumferential grooves that evacuate water from under the tread and reduce the risk of hydroplaning. Continental’s new generation casing technology combined with new materials in the tread adds more responsive handling and dramatically reduced road noise on the highway.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts for added strength and durability, as well as two polyester body plies for enhanced ride comfort. The ContiTrac SUV comes in a single 17 inch size, and features a limited tread warranty.

Pros

  • Dry and wet traction is very good
  • Comfortable ride without a lot of noise
  • Tread life is excellent

Cons

  • Softer sidewall reduces cornering performance
  • Winter handling

Overall Thoughts

Continental’s attempt at producing a tire specifically for SUV’s is met with mixed results. Traction on dry roads is very good, as is wet grip most of the time. The tire rides comfortably and road noise is not bad at all. Tread life is another positive on this model. We’ve heard some drivers getting 60K miles or more out of the tread.

Unfortunately, the softer sidewall on this tread design means you give up a little cornering performance in return. While that may not be a big issue for most drivers, it may be for those who enjoy more spirited driving. Winter handling is another area that we would like to see improvement in. It does an adequate job in light snow, but deep snow and icy road conditions require extra attention.

Overall, we rank this tire in the middle of the class for highway all-season tires. You may want to consider models such as the Michelin Defender LTX M/S or Yokohama Geolandar H/T-S G051 among others.
