Continental Conti 4×4 Contact Tire Review & Rating

The Conti 4×4 Contact from Continental is used primarily as original equipment on many of today’s luxury crossovers and sedans from manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz and others. Designed for all-season use, the 4×4 Contact is built to provide excellent road manners to go with a comfortable ride.

This model utilizes a silica based all-season tread compound that combines with a non-directional tread pattern for enhanced dry and wet pavement traction. Continental also uses a computer-optimized tread design to increase noise resistance and improve overall ride quality.

Continental Conti 4x4 Contact Tire Review

Wide circumferential grooves and the tire’s lateral grooves evacuate water from under the tread in wet weather conditions. They also reduce the risk of hydroplaning and increase safety behind the wheel, although this is an area that could be improved on.

Continental has provided multiple sipes around the tread that are created to give the tire biting edges for better performance in light off-road terrain, as well as on snow covered surfaces. However, as numerous driver reviews have pointed out so well, winter performance is lacking on this model.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that are reinforced with nylon for added strength and durability throughout the speed zone. This model is available in H and V-speed ratings, and sizes range from 16-20 inches.

Pros

  • Dry traction is good
  • Crisp steering response
  • Ride is comfortable for the most part

Cons

  • Short tread life
  • Winter handling

Overall Thoughts

We will say that the 4×4 Contact provides good traction and stability on dry pavement, and the steering response is crisp, while delivering a good overall feel for the road, both in town and out on the highway. Ride comfort is good for the most part, but you may find a little more road noise than you would like. That’s been something mentioned by a few drivers on this tire.

Beyond that, traction in winter weather conditions is disappointing. Light snow handling is not that bad, but deeper snow and ice are problematic, with some simply stating that performance is terrible. In addition, far too many drivers have complained about a short tread life to ignore.

Overall, we rank this tire in the bottom half of its class.
