Bridgestone Dueler H/T 687 Tire Review & Rating

The Dueler H/T 687 from Bridgestone is designed to provide dependable highway all-season traction and handling for a variety of pickups and SUV’s. Used as original equipment on vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester and Nissan Murano, the HT 687 has been a part of the Bridgestone lineup for several years now.

An all-season tread compound and computer designed and optimized tread pattern is engineered for enhanced traction and a more quiet ride. The tread design also provides increased dry and wet traction, as well as quicker steering response. Rounded shoulders give predictable cornering grip, which isn’t bad for a basic all-season model.

Three circumferential grooves aid in evacuating water from under the tread and creating a higher level of wet traction. They also reduce the risk of hydroplaning. The tire’s deeper tread depth not only extends treadlife, but helps provide a bit of extra traction on all types of road surfaces, although neither of these are a strong point on this tire.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts for added strength. A polyester cord body increases ride comfort and better wear. Sizes available range from 16-18 inches, and there is a limited tread warranty on this model.

Pros

  • Very good dry traction
  • Predictable cornering grip
  • Comfortable ride

Cons

  • Wet traction could be better
  • Road noise at highway speeds
  • Poor treadwear
  • Not the best in winter weather

Overall Thoughts

The H/T 687 is designed to be a dependable basic all-season tire, but unfortunately we can’t recommend it. We do feel this model provides good ery traction on most road surfaces other than gravel. Cornering grip is pretty decent, and the ride is comfortable for the most part.

On the other hand, wet handling is an area we could see improvement in. When there is a lot of water on the road you might find yourself fish tailing if you are not careful and paying attention. The other area this tire could be improved on is winter traction. It’s poor, and it gets worse on ice. Use caution. Beyond that, road noise at highway speeds could be lowered. This is a point mentioned many times by other driver reviews as well.

Finally, we’ve heard far too many drivers speak of getting very poor treadlife to simply chalk it up to a heavy foot on the gas pedal. Even with regular rotations you may find yourself not getting the mileage from the tread you do with other models.

Overall, we rank the HT 687 in the lower half of its class. You might want to consider other higher performing tires like the Michelin Defender LTX M/S, General Grabber HTS60 or Yokohama YK-HTX among a host of others.
