Dunlop SP Sport 5000 Tire Review & Rating

The SP Sport 5000, or 5000M as it is also known as, is Dunlop’s ultra-high performance tire that is designed for sport coupes, sedans, SUV’s, crossovers and sport trucks. This tire has also been widely used as original equipment on vehicles like the Hyundai Genesis, Mitsubishi Lancer and several others over the last few years.

An all-season tread compound combines with an asymmetric tread pattern that features larger shoulder blocks and independent inner tread blocks for increased traction and cornering grip on dry pavement. The tire’s continuous center rib is engineered to provide enhanced steering response and tire stability.

Four circumferential grooves around the tire channel away water on wet road surfaces, while full faced cross-cut sipes add biting edges for traction on wet, slush or snow covered pavement.

Inside the tire you will find two steel belts that use Dunlop’s Jointless Band technology for added strength and durability at higher speeds. It also smoothens the ride and promotes more even treadwear. There is also a built-in rim protector that helps prevent accidentally damaging your wheels against curbs and other obstructions. Sizes are available from 15-20 inches and speed ratings up to a W.

Pros

  • Very good dry and wet traction
  • Responsive steering
  • Ride is comfortable

Cons

  • Poor winter handling
  • Tire gets noisy as it wears down
  • Tread life could be better

Overall Thoughts

We were really expecting to find much better performance out of the Dunlop 5000 than what it delivers. On the positive side, dry and wet traction is pretty good on most road surfaces. The steering is crisp and responsive, while providing good cornering grip. Ride comfort is pretty decent for the most part as well.

Unfortunately, there are a few negatives. Winter handling performance is poor at best. Although it is an all-season tire, it is not good on snow and ice, with some reviews from other drivers saying to just leave the car parked at home rather than risk getting out on the streets. Of course, if you live in an area that sees very little snow then this will not be an issue. Beyond that the tire gets a bit noisy as it wears down, and treadwear has shown to be poor as well.

Overall, while there are simply much better choices for a new set of tires than the Sport 5000. We feel that tires like the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 Plus, BFGoodrich Comp-2 A/S, Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 and many others would make for a better option for your vehicle.

  1. These came OEM on my 2017 Toyota Crewmax 4×4 Limited. Always took it to dealer for everything. Had tires checked and rotated quite often even though they said I didn’t need to. I drive it @ 12 miles a day over very good roads. Every now and then I drive on turnpike. I have 26000 miles on these tires and the wear bars are showing. Need to replace to pass inspection. 26000 miles, really? They rode nice, but must be as soft as butter to obtain the smooth ride at the sacrifice of poor tread life.

  2. I had my new toyota CHR for less than 2 years I have almost 36 thousand miles can I please get new tires free of charge. I am so disappointed this is horrible please respond. My dealer said because it has no defects I cant
    Please respond.

  3. These were OE for my 2018 Mazda 3 Grand Touring.
I live in Minnesota and my first winter I just thought I had to get used to my new car and these tires. NO.
These might be considered AS… but they are horrible in snow and ice… even a hint of snow or ice and you are screwed.
Now I do know that I have to take into account that Mazda has reduced the weight of all of their vehicles, to make them more fuel efficient.
But it still doesn’t explain why I slowly slid across three lanes of traffic on I-494 while traveling at 35 mph… with only a light dusting of snow on the ground. Or why starts and stops require a few extra minutes to complete.
I only have about 15,000 miles on these tires but I WILL be replacing them before the weather changes.

    1. Hi Keith. I purchased a 2018 Mazda 6 July 2018 and I have 29,400 miles and I also need to replace my tires and have been very disappointed with the performance. I also have a slight vibration.
      Thank you for your post.

  4. My wife drives a 2016 Mazda 6 Touring with the Dunlop SP’s. Rotate them religiously every 5k mikes. At 30k mikes they are pretty much toast. Road noise has increased and the car has now developed a slight vibration at 65 or so mph, which has me concerned. Replacing them now and cannot in good faith recommend this tire to anyone as a viable option.

  5. These tires aren’t the best. They work good for original tires in the car but you’ll have to replace them pretty quick! I’m at 19 and they are completely bald. Now I’m replacing them with some Potenzas. Thank you though. I am grateful for the life of the tire which was amazing! Just wished it would last more.

  6. 2019 Toyota Corolla XSE less than 10000 (10k) miles on car. Tires are OE on car.
This is my son’s car. Rode in and driven this car a few times. Last time I drove this car, it had a lot of noise. Told my son, he took it to the Toyota dealer. He was told all 4 tires were cupped. That explains the excessive noise. The car was also checked for any mechanical issues that could have caused the cupping, no problems.
Personally, I don’t expect performance tires to last to 40k miles with easy to moderate driving habits.

  7. I have a 2017 Mazda 3 hatchback and have 68,000 miles on my originals with easily another 5,000 to go before they will be close to minimum tread!! I think that is amazing!

    1. I drive Mazda 6 2017 GrandTouring. Tread wear forced change as the life is over . I have 71000 miles in my car.
I have had no issues . Not so great in winter or ice but kinda felt handling is lot better than mine current yokohoma advan sport a/s.

    1. I think you should contact the company for warranty, but before that you can
also check with you dealer. I will also research about this and get back to you.
