Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring Tire Review & Rating

The new Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring is the latest model in the company’s lineup, and arguably one of their best. Built for drivers of coupes, sedans, crossovers and SUV’s, the CS5 Ultra Touring features a host of new technology that add to performance and longevity.

A new generation silica tread compound includes up to 4 times more silica than many other competitor tires. The added silica is designed to increase grip on dry road surfaces, as well as on wet or snow covered streets. This is further enhanced through 3D micro gauge grooves which provide added stability and traction, especially in the area of cornering and handling. This is a real strength for this model.

StabilEdge technology ensures that steering is responsive and consistent, while also delivering added control throughout the speed range.

Finally the CS5 Ultra Touring tires has Wear Square technology, which is a visual indicator of tread wear that allows you to see how many miles of tread are left on the tire. An asymmetric tread design gives you the ability to easily rotate tires side to side.

You can find this tire in a variety of 15 to 19 inch sizes, speed ratings of H, V and W. Cooper backs the tire with either a 60,000 mile or 50,000 mile tread warranty.

Pros

  • Impressive dry and wet traction on a range of road surfaces
  • Smooth and very comfortable ride quality
  • Very good value and performance for the money
  • Excellent tread warranty

Cons

  • Deeper snow and ice traction

Overall Thoughts

For the price, the Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring are an excellent value. They deliver solid dry and wet performance on all types of road surfaces, while providing responsive steering and control. Cornering grip and stability is among the best in class. We’d say it compares favorably with the Pirelli P7 All Season Plus in this area.

The ride is comfortable, and this is a remarkably smooth and stable tire. Road noise is minimal and perhaps just a bit more than the CS5 Grand Touring. Cooper also includes a nice 50K or 60K mile warranty as well.

Overall, this is simply one of the best performing touring all-season tires available today, especially if you’re looking for a little more sporty handling. Highly recommended.

      1. Well, probably because when you sort tires and check all season they show up. I for one was thinking about getting these tired but since they don’t handle well in snow I’ll look elsewhere.

  1. These tires are absolutely horrible. They are noisy and get serious flat-spotting after sitting for as little as a couple hours. The ride gets a little better after driving for 3-4 miles but is still very noisy. They are installed on a 2005 Lexus which now doesn’t ride nearly as well as my ’98 Chevy pickup truck. After 5000 miles I am switching them for another brand. I would definitely not recommend them.

  2. Just had to replace a set of Cooper LS5 Ultra Touring 255 / 45 / 19 on a 2015 Taurus. This after maybe a year and a half. One tire had developed knots or “goose eggs” on the inner side wall and two tires had the side wall crack and breakdown. The dealer found this on a rotation and said they were starting to come apart. These tires had 30,000 and were rotated on average 6000 miles. The Big “O” Tire dealer said they are considered a performance tire and only carried a one year warranty on workmanship. Not happy with the dealer for insinuations and will be calling Cooper about their tires.

    1. Oh that’s really unfortunate Micheal, I will suggest you discuss your warranty issue with Cooper. Good luck and don’t forget to let us know how it goes.

  3. I had bought a set of these tires through the internet from jet. Absolutely the worst tire I have ever purchased. The tires were noisy from the start and got worse as time went on. After 15K miles, all four tires had broken the interior support plys or bands and exhibited weird and inconsistent tread wear (different from every tire both front to back, side to side).

Finally swapped them when not one but two tires developed goose eggs on the side wall. I tried to receive a pro-rated refund from Cooper, but that was a rabbit hole which resulted in a waste of time. I don’t know if Cooper had a bad batch or something, but I was highly disappointed. Especially as I had such phenomenal experiences with their E rated tires for my trucks (80K miles !).

I cannot discourage anyone from buying this tire anymore than that.

The vehicle was a 20017 Ford Escape Titanium with 19″ rims.

    1. Hey Matt, that’s really bad. I am sorry you had such a bad experience with these tires. Your feedback is
really appreciated, I’ll definitely do more research on this.

  4. I will be purchasing the 215 70 R15’s today for my wife’s ’07 Town & country..I initially looked at the Hancook Omptima 727 which is a 70k warranty. Review to follow..
