Barum Brillantis 2 Tire Review & Rating

The Barum Brillantis 2 high-performance summer touring tire is a complete redesign of their original Brillantis that has been a popular model for several years. The Brillantis 2 is built for drivers of all types of smaller sport coupes and sedans who are looking for confident wet and dry traction, responsive handling and longer treadlife.

Barum combines their unique summer tread compound with an asymmetric tread pattern that helps to enhance dry traction and handling, as well as quicker steering response. Stiffer outer shoulder blocks add to cornering grip, while also providing better stability at higher speeds.

Three wide circumferential grooves and the tire’s lateral grooves aid in channeling away water for increased grip on wet pavement. Barum has also added sipes around the tread further improving the traction and reducing the risk of hydroplaning. The combination of the tread pattern and these design elements are said to reduce braking distance by 3%. Although that doesn’t seem to be much, in a panic stop it could be the difference in stopping safely or having an accident.

Brillantis 2 tires sport built-in tread wear indicators that allow you to immediately see if it’s time to replace worn out tires. Barum has increased the contact patch on this model to aid in lengthening treadlife, which other driver reviews have mentioned as being a real plus on this tire.

Sizes are available ranging from 13-15 inches, and come with T, H or V-speed ratings. A 40K mile tread warranty is also provided on all sizes.

Overall Thoughts

The Brillantis 2 is a step-up to the original in many ways in our opinion. You can expect to find solid dry traction and very good handling performance. Grip on wet pavement is about average. It’s not great, but it’s not poor either.

Ride comfort on this model is pretty good overall, although this is no Michelin tire. You’ll find a little extra road noise, especially as the tire begins wearing down, but that said, it’s nothing overly excessive. Finally, treadlife has shown to be good at this point.

While arguably not on the level of performance of the best in class tires here, the Brillantis 2 is a good tire that also comes with a budget-friendly price, making it a nice value in a low-cost summer tire.
